I've realized recently that the majority of conversations that are had about anything are attempts at making "catnip", rather than coming to truths (which may or may not be controversial).

One of my biggest struggles in connecting with people was not realizing whether I was in a catnip conversation or an ideas conversation but once I understood the difference, things became a lot easier.

Because of things like this, I've sometimes tried to fix the incentives for myself to make them more 'pure': disabling notifications for likes/follows/subscribes, disabling the number displays on the dashboard etc. However, by removing the opportunity for a dopamine hit, this also tends to reduce my motivation to write more often. Systems like this are intrinsically difficult to engage with in a healthy way, no matter how hard you try.

I've long felt that twitter was a bit gross (even before I had the pleasure of seeing people like Richard Hanania bravely defend plagiarism). I think this helps me understand part of why. Though there's an overlapping phenomena I also wonder about... It seems to me that even if people aren't being mercenary and are just there for fun, they still end up capitulating to the Algorithm. The whole system is designed to push our reward buttons and everyone seems to end up subconsciously modifying their behavior to get more "engagement". Reddit (used to?) have space for interesting little subcultures to grow. Twitter is a homogeneous blob of unnuanced snark.

People hate on Reddit but it also was the first to Bicoin, Covid, and so many more things. Yes many disillusioned confirmation biased people can give it a bad name.

But Reddit is where true dynamic nuanced ideas happen, the issue is you need to search through shit to find it.
