It’s funny. When the pinnacle of your ambitions is to achieve an upper middle class wage working for a large technology corporation, you will unknowingly handicap yourself in accomplishing that very goal. The universe will desperately, over and over again, offer you a subpar replacement for your dreams. Want to work at OpenAI or Anthropic? How about Meta instead. Want to work at Meta? How about Amazon. Want Amazon? How about some shitty regional bank as a “stepping stone.”

Many intelligent people make entire lives out of chasing one status symbol to the next. You will see them over and over again at MBB or FAANG or Big Law. Powerful cognitions turned to cogs by their unwillingness or inability to go beyond getting gold stars in one role after the other without ever winning anything for themselves.

What a banger - couldn't agree more. As someone who won "the lottery" by pure chance, I can tell you that wealthy families do in fact "bribe" for these jobs.

It's just very subtle. If a firm services your company, you might hint that you'd like a referral for your kid. Or you might ask a buddy to hire them as an intern for a summer and then path dependence does the rest. Most firms don't screen for the things they should because it is difficult to do, and they don't need to hit it out of the park with every candidate.
